The Olympic Games, subject of this Journalism Grade 11 and 12,assignment, have been, over many years, an Inspiring event.

This is a letter for educators who are interested in creating excitement in their students for local journalism through writing and photography for a local community website. Best wishes for the rest of this school year.

Since the appearance of the phrases “fake news” and “alternative facts” in our everyday speech, good, ethical and accurate journalism has become even more critical to the defense of our democracy.

The Canadian and World Studies Curriculum calls for students to have an active participation for the common good, in their local communities.  What better way is there for students to learn about their community than for them to write about it? Students would be encouraged by having their best articles published on a community news website.

The Olympics, an international event, attracts young people both as participants as well as spectators. The thrill of watching and participating as young people could last even until old age! Teachers should grasp this “every four year opportunity” now to invigorate their student interest in sport which could lead to long term mental and physical health. This assignment is for grades 11 or 12 students.

The sources of information for students could be newspapers covering the Olympics over two weeks or other media. The CBC is known as the home of the Beijing Olympics 2022 in Canada. .Viewers who may not have cable can watch on the streaming app for CBC GEM, the CBC Olympics app, and the CBC Sports Beijing Olympics website. Watch on CBC TV, TSN, and Sportsnet.  CBC TV has a complete guide to persons participating on Team Canada sports cbc.ca/Olympics.

Students first need to choose a member of the Canadian Olympic Team.  Any sport will be OK. In writing about this person’s life story consider: i. where they grew up ii. their family and supporters iii. their passion for their sport as well as iv. the challenges they have had to overcome to become a member of Team Canada Beijing 2022. The student will be truly inspired!  Your story about your chosen sports person should be 150-200 words long.  You could become a sports journalist! Teachers who have classes participating, will choose two (2) of the best articles per class from students in the classes they are teaching to be published in the York West Advocate.

The deadline for students to complete and email their article to their teachers on the life and accomplishments of one member of Canada’s Olympic Team is TUESDAY MARCH 1, 2022

The deadline for teachers to choose two (2) of the best articles per class and to email these choices to

ywadvocate@gmail.com is TUESDAY MARCH 8 2022.

Best 2 articles of each class will be published in the Advocate after spring break.
