Team 746 Gearheads at the FIRST World Championship

Westview Centennial Secondary School had two robot teams in the 2016 FIRST Robot season. The Teams were 886 Wildcats and 746 Gearheads.

The senior Team 886 Wildcats which started in 2002, competed at the Greater Toronto Central Regional event at Ryerson University Mattamy Athletic Centre March 2, 2016  The Gearheads competed with other High School teams from around the GTA . The team placed 33rd out of 41 teams.

The other Westview Team, 746 Gearheads, attended the Greater Toronto East Regional event at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa March 9, 2016.  The Gearheads competed with teams from the GTA, Ontario, New York, and Texas.

They had great success and was a member of the alliance ( four other teams, three from the GTA and one from Texas) that won the Regional Event.  This entitled the Gearheads a position at the World Championships in St Louis April 27, 2017.

The FIRST World Championship was held at the Dome of the America’s Center St Louis Mo. USA. Formerly home of the NFL football team the RAMS.  There were 600 teams from around the world. The countries competing were: Australia, Turkey, Israel, Holland, Mexico, Brazil, China, Taiwan, and more. 

The Gearheads were in the Carson Division which had 75 Teams.  The robot driver – Brian CA obtained a reputation for being an aggressive defending and causing the opposing teams to foul. After 5 days of competition and two 20 hour bus rides the team to and from the event, the Gearheads placed 58th out of 75 teams.

The road to the Championship was an excellent adventure for the eight team members and two mentors who made the World Championships. Mentors- William Thorne, Richard Badal, Students- Brian Cao, Prasanthan Aruchunan, Jasraj Bhangu, Ryan Lakhan, William Nguyen, Andrew Phanthasanomchit, Salhi Issa and Brian Nguyen

The Gearheads get to compete again in 2017 FIRST Robot Season beginning Jan 7, 2017
