Andre Ford-Azonwanna was born in Canada and spent his childhood years in Jamaica. He returned to Canada and Toronto finishing his elementary school years at St. Charles Garnier. The inspiration for his amazing accomplishments on the track began after watching Usain Bolt win the 100 metre dash at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Westview’s Track Athlete Shines BrightBy: Adwoa Gyasi-Nimako, Guest Contributor

“There’s no track team like Westview, the school has a reputation of success, it’s something to be proud of and remember that when you step on the track wearing my beloved school” this was a pep talk I gave to the Westview track and field team as they prepared to compete at the Toronto Track and Field Championships. For me, a former Westview student-athlete, these words mean more than these kids even know. I was once in their shoes, bright-eyed, ready to tackle the world both in the classroom and on the track. It was at Westview that I honed my skills and excelled as a former provincial OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) champion in the senior girls 100m & 400m resulting in me receiving a full-athletic scholarship to the University of Arkansas. Now as a volunteer coach, the memories are coming back.

Training on a gravel track, running workouts within the school halls, using the little available resources to make you a better and faster athlete, these things all build character. Westview student-athletes have the ability to look beyond their surroundings and persevere. It’s not a skill that most kids their age possess, or even some adults. But that’s what sets Westview student-athletes apart, despite their environment; they continue to train daily with goals of being great.

Ehab El-Sandali, is a shining star. As a distance runner, he has won gold in the 3000 meters at the Metro Champions for the past two years, and has successfully qualified for OFSAA. If Ehab keeps the same level of competiveness and attitude he can easily win at OFSAA. If accomplished he joins a list of a provincial greats. He trains very hard, and each distance he runs is making him stronger. But what is most impressive about Ehab is his attitude, he never complains. In that alone I see in him the potential to be an outstanding athlete at the post-secondary level.

With a great coaching team headed by Mr. Bob Mandl and Mr. Brian Taborek, the future of Westview track and field athletics remains in good hands and student-athletes such as Ehab will continue to shine bright both on the track and in the classroom.

Ehab is an outstanding junior boy distance athlete. Running for Westview in the all Toronto Metro meet he won the 1500 and 3000 metre races. Earlier in the North Regional meet he won the 800,1500, 3000 metre races and  was one of the four winning runners in the 4x400 metre relay team race.

Ashlee is a short distance senior athlete. In the all Toronto Metro meet she came 4th in the 100 metre dash and 5th in the 200 metre. In the North Regional meet, however she came first in the 100,200,400 metre races. In the 4x100 metre relay race she anchored the Westview team which the senior women won.
